Diffusive Shock Acceleration of High Energy Cosmic Rays
نویسنده
چکیده
The process of diffusive acceleration of charged particles in shocked plasmas is widely invoked in astrophysics to account for the ubiquitous presence of signatures of non-thermal relativistic electrons and ions in the universe. A key characteristic of this statistical energization mechanism is the absence of a momentum scale; astrophysical systems generally only impose scales at the injection (low energy) and loss (high energy) ends of the particle spectrum. The existence of structure in the cosmic ray spectrum (the ”knee”) at around 3000 TeV has promoted contentions that there are at least two origins for cosmic rays, a galactic one supplying those up to the knee, and even beyond, and perhaps an extragalactic one that can explain even the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) seen at 1-300 EeV. Accounting for the UHECRs with familiar astrophysical sites of acceleration has historically proven difficult due to the need to assume high magnetic fields in order to reduce the shortest diffusive acceleration timescale, the ion gyroperiod, to meaningful values. Yet active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts remain strong and interesting candidate sources for UHECRs, turning the theoretical focus to relativistic shocks. This review summarizes properties of diffusive shock acceleration that are salient to the issue of UHECR generation. These include spectral indices, acceleration efficencies and timescales, as functions of the shock speed and mean field orientation, and also the nature of the field turbulence. The interpretation of these characteristics in the context of gamma-ray burst models for the production of UHECRs is also examined.

Cosmic-ray acceleration in supernova shocks
Galactic cosmic rays are widely believed to be accelerated in expanding shock waves initiated by supernova explosions. The theory of diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays is now well established, but two fundamental questions remain partly unanswered: what is the acceleration efficiency, i.e. the fraction of the total supernova energy converted to cosmic-ray energy, and what is the maximu...
متن کاملEffect of energy losses and interactions during diffusive shock acceleration: applications to SNR, AGN and UHE Cosmic Rays
I discuss the shape of the high energy end of the spectrum of particles arising from diffusive shock acceleration in the presence of (i) additional diffusive escape from the accelerator, (ii) continuous energy losses, (iii) energy changes arising from interactions. The form of the spectrum near cut-off is sensitive to these processes as well as to the momentum-dependence of the diffusion coeffi...
متن کاملAnomalous transport and particle acceleration at shocks
The theory of first order Fermi acceleration at shocks assumes that particles diffuse due to scattering off slow-moving magnetic irregularities. However, cosmic rays are closely tied to magnetic field lines, and the transport process, particularly across the direction of the field, is likely to be more complicated. To describe cross field transport we employ recent extensions of the Rechester-R...
متن کاملTurbulent amplification of magnetic field and diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays
The diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays by supernova remnants depends upon the generation of magnetic fluctuations by cosmic rays upstream of the shock. Strongly driven, non-resonant, nearly purely growing modes grow more rapidly than the resonant Alfvén waves usually considered. Non-linear simulation shows that the magnetic field can be amplified from its seed value by orders of magnit...
متن کاملRadio emission and nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic rays in the supernova SN 1993J
Aims. The extensive observations of the supernova SN 1993J at radio wavelengths make this object a unique target for the study of particle acceleration in a supernova shock. Methods. To describe the radio synchrotron emission we use a model that couples a semianalytic description of nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration with self-similar solutions for the hydrodynamics of the supernova expansi...
